This month flew by! Ron's granddaughter was with us for a week and we've been working around the yard as the gardens mature. I've been putting in some miles on the bicycle (rode 40 miles to Pringle, 53 miles to Rapid City, 40 miles to Oelrichs and 20 really easy miles to Edgemont.) I took the Edgemont ride on Friday, taking the Mickelson Rails to Trails. The summer storms had eroded the trail and filled the stock dams where I didn't even know they existed before because of the previous years' drought! Sheep Canyon has quite a view and the wild plums were ready to pick! These purple flowers were blossoming all along the dry sandy trailside. I also took a peek into what I think was an uranium mine in the sandstone, where it looks like some new prospecting is taking place. I guess we need electricity to power our future electric cars! I'm really happy with our gardens this year; the rains have really helped them grow, and replacing all the poisoned dirt last spring helped too! The flowers are just wonderful right now. The vegetable garden has outgrown its garden. I have 'way too many plants for the space. So I begged Ron to help me expand it. We hunted for dirt (our good neighbor Bub let us take some from his private stash, since there was none to be found at a reasonable price in Hot Springs.) We went to the stockyard for 3 loads of manure. I took all the peat moss from our local store. I set block and shovelled a lot of dirt and manure. I even filled the blocks with gravel so they wouldn't move around. We have to go shopping for fence yet so I just propped the side fence up temporarily to keep the deer out. So next year, I have a special place planned for strawberries and the veggies can grow happily! I took a picture of the cabbage - one of the biggest surprises for me was how wonderful it tastes! It is one of the freshest and cleanest tastes I have had! We're hooked, so it definitely goes on next years list of seeds. Hope your gardens are growing well too!
