We had fun yesterday going deep sea fishing with Ron’s brother in law Mark. The boat was “The Patriot” which sailed out of San Luis Harbor at Morro Bay, a small fishing boat loaded with people fishing.
Here’s a picture of the bay.
Here’s our boat. We had to arrive at 5 a.m. in order to beat the wind (a daily occurrence around here.)
Before we got to the fishing area, we stopped off to check the 15 crab pots. Here’s a picture of the deckhands bringing up the pots. We each got 3 Dungeness crabs – mmm!
We were fishing for rock cod. The cod love to hang out in the rocks and pinnacles way down on the ocean floor 150 feet or so, which meant we had to bounce the sinker along the bottom and float the bait slightly above. Which meant we lost a lot of sinkers and bait in the rocks – errgh.
Ron caught 4 fish, I caught 2 and Mark 1 (he wasn’t feeling well – seasick). But we ended up with more than that in our bags, I guess other fishermen didn’t want all that fish. That’s okay, we’ll eat it!
The crabs had to be cooked, so we brought them to a restaurant on the pier who cooked them up for us (so we didn’t stink up the house). And we had the deckhands fillet out the fish. But the crabs still had to be cleaned up when we got home, so we all got together and did that chore. Then we ate some – the best part!
